MLCD Lab Was Represented at the Many Paths to Language (MPaL 2026) Conference!

We are proud to share that members of the Multimodal Language and Cognitive Development Lab presented their research at the Many Paths to Language (MPaL 2026) conference, held at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen, Netherlands.

Asya Hilal Çebi presented a poster based on her master's project, examining how child temperamental reactivity and maternal personality traits (specifically agreeableness and openness) interact to shape maternal language input (MLI: reading strategies, gestures, and word tokens) during book sharing, and how these factors subsequently predict preschoolers' narrative complexity in Turkish-speaking mother-child dyads.

Mehmet Ali Atik presented a poster titled "Many Paths to Vocabulary Development: Iconicity and Phonological Complexity in Early Lexical Sign Development", conducted in collaboration with Dr. Beyza Sümer. Investigating lexical sign production in 6- to 12-year-old deaf children with early vs. late sign exposure across 167 emoji prompts, the study revealed that iconicity significantly facilitates sign production accuracy for both groups—with an even stronger facilitative effect observed in late-signing children—while phonological complexity had a relatively modest role.(Poster link: https://lnkd.in/dz44h2_y
